Where do forgotten things go?

Is there someone whose job it is to pick up everything that is left behind? Do all the forgotten things get swallowed by earth so that new things grow in their place? How is the life of someone that doesn't realize what they have missed? How is the life of someone that spends their life looking for something thats isn’t theirs.
